Bob Conley MM2 A div. Steam heat gang. Looking for Jerry Bowers Walt Weyermeyer, other A or M div. guys form 69-jan 71. Remember a f8 landing sideways in the catawalk and the fire truck knocking it over the side with water. There it hung in the arresting grear with engine running, pilot dead on ejection. Then they cut the plane loose. Also remember the pot skniffing dogs the Marines had when we were in Subic. One dog idicated I had drugs. but when i lifted up my shirt a ham sandwich hit the deck and the dog scarfed it up in one gulp!
My brother, J.Daniel Caro, served with the arresting and catapault crews for two cruises to the Korean War in the early 50's. He is well and happy, and I would be happy to communicate any messages to him.
I doubt your dad even came close to being a hero of any war.

I served aboard the Mighty 'O' in '70 with HC-1DET-6 as a rescue swimmer. I managed to get 2 rescues in before being medivac'd out for surgery. The first one was(according to the debreifing I got) a guy fresh out of boot walked behind a jet doing a runup off the stbd flight deck, and blew him into the nets. I suppose he was so scared or disoriented that he stood up and got blown the rest of the way overboard. The one thing that really stands out in my memory was how warm the water was! It was about the same as bath water! The second rescue was at night, and what a night it was! The seas seemed to be at least 10-15 foot chop, no horizion, no nothin! My pilot had a terrible time maintaing a hover because he had no referance points to line up on. Anyhow, I jumped out of the helo into the water, only problem was, my jump order was missed-timed and I landed in a trough,(approx 30')I got my bearings and swam to the pilot,he said he was ok, but I double checked to be sure. I drug him back to the pickup point, hooked up the both of us and signaled to winch up. We got back to the carrier, then to sickbay for a checkup. My big regret is, I never got his name.. If anyone out there remembers this night, I sure would like to hear from you.(the rescue was in early july) Thanks for this site! Stanley P. Saliga, AN

My dad served aboard the Oriskany during Korea. He had a cruise book called "On Guard" from this cruise. Unfortunately he lost this and all of the rest of his mementos from his time aboard ship during the 49er fire in northern Ca. in 1988. I remember many a late evening sitting with him and the book and man the questions would fly!! I was fotunate enough to have the opportunity this past weekend to visit the USS Hornet Museum in Alameda CA. with my son and his Cub Scout pack. It wasn't the Oriskany but I cetainly have a better understanding of the things my dad and I used to talk about while reading his book and looking at the pictures. If anyone knows the whereabouts of a copy of this book or knows how to obtain one-Please E-Mail me @:dmnlyk@yahoo.com. Thanks for a great site.
I served form Aug 3 1972 till Feb 21 1975. I was in V1 Div. a ROOF RAT Tractor Driver. Made a few CPO'S mad for driving to fast, while towing or pushing a bird back. I had the honor to serve aboard the "Ole Risk at Sea" from 1970 through 1974. I was a Ship Fitter and, and worked in the ship fitter shop at the rear of the hangar deck. A lot great memories, and a few bad ones, one that I still remember is the night unrep we had with the USS Nitro and ended up colliding with her. I was on the #1 hose team and can still remember the collision. One sailor on the Nitro was no more than 15 feet from me and I still remember him saying,"I'm to short for this "sh t", what a night. Best memory I have however is all the great shipmates and friends I was able to meet. Made three West Pacs. Just wanted to write somthing down of the time I served on the old lady. Hi, Great site. I was on 70-73 was RM3. Glenn
About a month ago I found a great, and I mean great web site that listed EVERY AWARD for ANY Navy ship or station All you had to do was scroll down and see the dates for every Oriskany Viet Nam campaign and other awards. I did not bookmark it, however, and now I can't find it. I'm sure it was found while I was looking Orikany and Ranger websites, since I served in both ships on a TAD basis between June 1969 and April 1970. Anybody know the site I'm talking about?? Mikekious@aol.com

Walter I am sure your father is proud of this web site it is really a job well done. I served aboard the Oriskany from 1971 to 1973 on her 6th and 7th combat deployment. She was quite a ship and so were the men that served aboard her. Thank you for honoring them. Bob Canchola Canchola60638aol.com

My name is Charles Chambliss. I was in the "A" division and was stationed in the deckedge elevator pump room. I served aboard the mighty "O" from 12/25/1954 until we de-comissioned her at Hunter's Point in San Francisco in 1957. To the person who asked where she is now, she is rusting away at the Maritime Administration (MARAD)berthing facility in the ship channel at Beaumont, Texas. I have not been able to get out to see her but there are some pictures made in 2000 that shows her to be in pretty bad shape on other web sites.
I was on the big O,on 10/26/66.I was a airplane pusher on hangar deck 2 when the fire started,in hangar deck 1-below #1 elevator, from someones mistake.I love the Oriskany, but hate it too-44 men lost their life within a few hours that day,and many were injured. We all did our best to save them, but lost that battle.I put more than 1 in a body bag that day,and zipped it up.Here it is--I said it,and did not spray it!!!
